HW DUE: CW/HW: Water Water Everywhere
Today in Class:
1. Mindful Minute
2. Debrief Water
3. Intro to Population
4. Intro to Video Project
5. Partners
6. CW/HW: Population Infographic Scavenger Hunt
Mindful Minute
Debrief Water
Start. Stop. Continue. Change.
Have students think about what they’ve learned about water over the past two class periods.
Then ponder the words: Start, Stop, Continue, Change [write on the board]
Based on their learning what are they going to start doing and stop doing? What will the continue doing? How will they change up what they’re doing? Discuss with your table groups for 5 minutes.

Intro to Population
So we’ve talked already this trimester about challenges and solutions surrounding climate change, consumerism and water.
If you could pinpoint a single source of all the environmental challenges we’ve talked about this year, what would it be?
Answer: Humans
New vocabulary word: Anthropogenic–“human caused”
(Opposite “naturogenic”)
Raise your hand if you think you know how many humans there are on the earth right now.
Raise your hand if you think you know how many human are living in the U.S. right now.
How many in the world?
About 7.7 billion
How many in the U.S.? 332 million
Show ticker on world of 7 billion website–zoom in, let them watch it for a little while.
Population predicted to reach about 9 million by 2100 and then will level off if we can get to 2 children per family.

Show graph of population increase
Ask students why is this concerning?
Major points:
More humans = more resources used
Modern 1st world lifestyle = more resources used (not sustainable)
More people living in modern 1st world lifestyle = huge amount of resources used (not sustainable)
Intro Video Project
Your final MA of the trimester is going to be to [this is all on website, so just show that]
“Create a short video – up to 60 seconds – about human population growth that highlights one of the following global challenges: Sustaining Water Systems, Ensuring Economic Opportunities, Improving Climate Resiliency. All videos must include:
a) how population growth impacts the issue
b) at least one idea for a sustainable solution
Consider narrowing your focus by concentrating on a subtheme within your topic.”

We’re going to do a variety of activities in class to help you choose your topic and find the information you want to put in your video. As well, Ms. Balcomb is going to be available to assist you, including coming to our class and you will have ample work time to work on this during class. The videos will be due the day before the end of the trimester and on the last day of class, we’ll do some reflection, submit the videos and share them with each other.
Partners
This will be a partner activity. I mentioned I was going to let you choose your partners. I am going to do that, but I’m going to provide some recommended partners for you to start with based on your video making abilities (based on your self-reflection on your own video making skills). Consider these recommendations. If you are a strong video maker, you have the opportunity to help someone who is not as strong. If you are not as strong in video making, think about what other skills you can offer to this research project. You are welcome to change up my recommendations.
Give students a few minutes to let their partner pairs sink in and negotiate. Make sure everyone can live with their partners.
CW/HW: Population Information Scavenger Hunt
The first step in this endeavor is to learn something about population and that’s what we’re going to do for the rest of this class period.
10 questions
Can work with partner but write separate responses
While you’re doing the work, discuss some of the topics you’re interested in–do additional readings on topics you’re interested in
When class is over you can access the wall chart online at: https://www.worldof7billion.org/teacher-resources/wall-chart/
Due at beginning of next period.
